Census Day

What is Census Day?
Census Day is a key day for our school in determining the funding we receive for the upcoming year. On this day, we report student attendance to the state and federal government. The data collected is used to allocate financial resources to our school based on the number of students present, which directly impacts our ability to provide essential services, programs, and staff for your child’s education.

Why is it Important?
Students who are absent on Census Day may not be counted in the funding calculations, which can affect our school’s budget and resources. The funding we receive helps ensure that we can continue offering quality education, extracurricular activities, and support services.

How Can You Help?
Please make sure your child(*) attends school tomorrow, Friday, 21 February. If your child is absent for any reason, kindly notify us as soon as possible. If your child has a pre-arranged absence (such as a doctor’s appointment), please let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.
*Please note: Year 11 and 12 students with off-site study or work arrangements, as well as students approved to study from home, are not required to attend.

We truly appreciate your cooperation in helping our school maintain the resources we need to provide the best educational experience for all students. Your support is vital, and we thank you for making attendance on Census Day a priority.

Scitech will be running this information session and will be providing families with a handbook containing ideas on how to talk maths with your kids at home and several games you can play.

You will then be invited to participate in a maths murder mystery, solving many fun maths puzzles to ultimately catch the culprit! It takes approximately 20 to 80 minutes to solve. The session will run for 1.5 hours. It is ideal if you can arrive at the beginning, but do not need to stay for the whole time.

Our Orientation Day is on Friday, November 10 and it is an opportunity for new students and their families to visit our school for a day, where they can have a look around, participate in their classes and meet their new teacher and classmates.

Carmel Primary has a specific half-day program for prospective Kindy students. Students in Pre-Primary to Year 6 are also invited to attend for the day and spend it with their appropriate class. All students in our school will be advanced into the grade that they will be going into next year.

At Carmel Secondary, the day is designed for students beginning high school in 2018. The focus is to familiarise students with the high school life and to assist with a smooth transition.

What is Protective Behaviours Education?
Protective Behaviours is a personal safety program that teaches children skills and strategies to identify and respond to a range of unsafe situations.

The program is underpinned by two core themes:
We all have the right to be safe and feel safe at all times.
We can talk with someone about anything, no matter what it is.
Protective Behaviours was developed in the USA in the 1970s by Peg Flandreau West, a school pastoral care worker who recognised that in most cases, children were harmed by someone they knew rather than a stranger.  Since that time, the program has evolved to respond to emerging issues impacting on the safety of children and young people.

Facilitator information:
Vanessa is a tenth-year science teacher dedicated to promoting student well-being. After being appointed as the Progressions Coordinator, she completed a mental health first aid certificate and the Gatekeeper suicide prevention training to better support students in times of crisis. Upon moving to Kennedy, she took on the role of Protective Behaviours Coordinator and underwent additional training in student well-being by completing the Protective Behaviours Universal Plus course to become a certified practitioner, as well as the KS: CPC Train the Trainer course with the Department of Education in South Australia. Vanessa is actively engaged in these programs because she wants to proactively change the statistics related to abuse and youth mental health.

Secondary Swimming Carnival

The Secondary Swimming Carnival is scheduled to happen at Kalamunda Water Park on Tuesday, 4th March. This is a normal school day, and all students are expected to attend, however, they do not need to participate in events.

Buses will be leaving school at 9am sharp. If your child is getting a different way to the venue, please send an email to your child’s homeroom teacher. Please note, students will not be allowed to enter the venue until 9am, so please don’t drop them off too early.

Please be aware that we carry basic first aid equipment to this event and encourage students to bring their own puffer and spacer, should they require it. This also applies to epi-pens. Students are encouraged to give their puffers to Mrs Foster who is our First Aid person for the day, so should it be required quickly, we aren’t trying to find school bags in a rush. We do have one in our kit, but with multiple students who may require it, using students’ own is most desirable.

Families are welcome to come along and support their children. Please note there is a small spectators fee that will need to be paid at the front window when you arrive. We hope you can join us for our annual Swimming Carnival!

Swimming lessons are held at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre, Progress Way, Belmont. Spectators are charged an entry fee at the pool.

If for any reason you need to collect your child from Belmont Oasis, please speak directly to your child’s teacher BEFORE-HAND and confirm in writing. Any child not collected by a parent by the time the bus leaves, will be returned to the school on the bus. NO child will be left at the pool unattended.

The Team Sports Carnival will be taking place at Ray Owen Sports Centre on Monday, 11 August.

Students will be participating in Basketball, Netball, Soccer, and European Handball, with the first fixtures due to start at 9:30am.

Parents are more than welcome to come support and cheer on the students as they compete throughout the day.

Food will be on sale throughout the day with the designated lunch break from 12:45am - 1:30pm.

Students can bring their own lunch, are encouraged to bring a labelled water bottle and any personal first aid items (eg. Asthma puffer, strapping tape).

To celebrate the end of their school journey, the year 12s have organised some fun activities and food for students on Thursday, 13th October.

All students may wear mufti for the day, however, covered shoes are required to be worn for Science and manual classes. There will be some water activities, and students who want to participate need to bring a change of clothes. They can also bring in their own water guns, water balloons, ‘bunch-o-balloons’ etc.

There is no charge for the mufti day, activities or food.
